Reviving Livestock Industry in Poor Communities in Bulacan and Aurora

The Project

There is no group of people more vulnerable to the effects of climate change and the increasing risks to animal health than our farmers. This is especially true with these agricultural communities in this video.

Meet the farmers of San Miguel, Bulacan, whose primary livelihood of hog-raising were wiped out by the swine flu that hit the region shortly before the pandemic; and the remote tribes of Aurora province, whose devastating farming challenges and lack of road to market leave families scrambling for an alternative source of income. Project Completion Report

The Farm Animals Project, implemented by God’s Love and Care Church, aimed to empower seven struggling families in Kalapnit, Aurora, and San Miguel, Bulacan by providing livestock and necessary resources to establish sustainable micro-businesses. With a project cost of Php 280,043 ($5,000), the initiative focused on native pig and goat farming in Aurora and hog farming in Bulacan. Key accomplishments include successful livestock distribution, training on animal care, and the implementation of a “pass-on-the-gift” system, fostering community support and sustainability. Beneficiaries experienced substantial income increases through the sale of livestock offspring, improved food security, and revitalized livelihoods. Despite challenges like limited initial capital and logistics, the project significantly enhanced economic well-being and promoted sustainable agricultural practices. Future recommendations include continuous training, support for value-added products, project expansion, and comprehensive impact assessments.
