Touched by Hope: Traditional “Hilot” Massage Therapists Upskill to Grow Income

The Project

In the mountains of Tanay, Rizal, the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous community faces daily economic struggles. Many families survive on less than $6 a day, with some waiting months between paychecks. But hope emerges through their ancestral healing traditions.

Through Pure Bayanihan’s partnership with local NGOs, 25 indigenous women are receiving TESDA NC II certification in massage therapy. This program transforms their traditional healing practices called “Hilot” into a sustainable livelihood, covering training costs, materials, transportation, and living allowances.

For these women, the certification means more than just skills—it’s their pathway to economic dignity. It enables them to preserve their cultural heritage while earning independently, supporting their families, and building a more secure future.

This is a story of resilience, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.

Project Completion Report

The Traditional Hilot Livelihood Project in Tanay, Rizal, with a budget of ₱205,500 ($3,605), trained 26 Dumagat-Remontado families in traditional Filipino massage therapy to provide them with sustainable employment. Participants underwent a 15-day training program, on-the-job practice, and TESDA NC II certification, qualifying them for work at campsites, resorts, and home services. Despite accessibility and economic challenges, the project successfully equipped trainees with employable skills, boosting their self-confidence and financial independence. Future recommendations include advanced training, business skills development, and positioning Tanay as the “Traditional Hilot Capital” to promote tourism and economic growth.
