Meriel Rejono, a 19-year-old housewife and mother of two, never imagined that a simple act of kindness could transform her life. Living with her husband Jeffrey and their young children, Meriel faced the daily struggle of making ends meet.
As young parents and unable to get an education, it was hard for Meriel and Jeff to find livelihood to support their family. “We were dependent on my in-laws who were also in poverty. It’s heartbreaking to have to look to other people for money to buy your children’s diapers and milk.”
Pure Bayanihan and Jesus Christ’s Glory Revealed International Christian Ministries Inc. (JCGRI) joined hands to bring the Microbusiness Livelihood Project to Meriel’s community, aiming to uplift the lives of indigent families like hers.
When Meriel learned that she had been chosen as one of the beneficiaries, her heart swelled with gratitude and excitement. “I was overjoyed,” she recalled, her eyes sparkling with emotion. Pure Bayanihan and JCGRI provided Meriel with the means to start a bigasan (rice selling) business.
This seemingly small venture became the turning point in her life, empowering her to take control of her family’s future. “Since Pure Bayanihan came into our lives, we’ve been able to improve our situation. It has been a significant help,” Meriel expressed, her voice filled with appreciation.
“When before we had to pool every piece of change to make 50 pesos to buy diapers, now we are earning ₱5,000 in a week through this rice business, which is more than enough for us to provide for our family’s needs and even support our in-laws. Thank you very much for this opportunity!”
Meriel’s story is just one of many that showcase the transformative impact of the Microbusiness Livelihood Project in Bamban, Tarlac. Through the tireless efforts of Pure Bayanihan and JCGRI, nine indigent families like Meriel’s have been given the tools and support they need to break free from the cycle of poverty and build a brighter future.
Eduardo Rejono’s story is equally inspiring. With the support of Pure Bayanihan, he now sells balut and snacks in his community, earning ₱840 per day. The pedicab provided by the project has expanded his reach and allowed him to diversify his products. “Thanks to our income from this livelihood, we can now pay for our household bills and meet our family’s needs,” Eduardo shared, his face beaming with pride.
The impact of the Microbusiness Livelihood Project goes beyond just financial gains. It has fostered a sense of community, resilience, and hope among the beneficiaries. They work together, share knowledge, and support one another, building a stronger, more vibrant future for themselves and their children.
Pastor Jo Cadiz, who witnessed the transformation firsthand, expressed his gratitude: “Thank you, Pure Bayanihan, for the opportunity you have given to the poor families in Anupol to once again find a livelihood. This is a big help, especially in their daily lives. May the Lord grant all success to Pure Bayanihan.”
