As the sun blazes down on the parched fields of the Sierra Madre foothills, the farmers face a daunting challenge: how to keep their crops alive with no water in sight.
The summer months in the Philippines can be unforgiving. The sun is unrelenting, the air thick with humidity.
For Albert Adriano, a farmer in one of the small villages at the Sierra Madre foothills, summer is a season to worry about their daily living. This small plot of land he cultivates is all that stands between his family and poverty.
He wakes up early each day and treks several kilometers to the nearest creek, hoping to fill up his containers with enough water to keep his crops alive. When he does get water from the creek, he stores it. However, it’s often not enough to last a couple of months.
When the creek inevitably dries up, Albert and his fellow farmers are left with no source of water for their crops. They will have to depend on unpredictable rainfall. In this harsh reality in the Philippine countryside, a bleak harvest means hunger and poverty.
This back-breaking task takes up most of his day, but Albert knows that giving up is not an option. For him and everyone in the community, farming isn’t just a job – it’s a way of life.
And they’ll do whatever it takes to keep their families fed and their communities thriving, even in the face of adversity.
But through a partnership between Green Earth Heritage and Pure Bayanihan, Albert and many other farmers like him now have a glimmer of hope.
Through the construction of a deep well funded by Pure Bayanihan, Albert and his fellow farmers will now have a steady source of water to grow their crops year-round, without worrying about the dry summer months.
